Elafonissi is located in the prefecture of Chania on the southwest side
of Crete, 73klm from the city of Chania. It is a small island about 150 m. from
the coast and the beach is a Natura 2000 protected area. The tropical pink
color of the sand and the crystal turquoise waters of the sea create a
fantastic landscape that is visited by thousands of visitors every year. Chrysoskalitissa
Monastery is an orthodox Christian monastery located on the southwest coast of
the island very close to the famous Elafonissi, as the distance from the famous
beach to the historic monastery is only seven kilometers. Built on rocks about 35 meters high and
overlooking the Libyan Sea. According to Cretan tradition, the name of the
monastery comes from one of the ninety steps leading there, which is said to be
golden.
